A Universal Home Demonstration

Project for British Columbia's Innovative

Green Home Building Industry

The SAFERhome project would like to build a high profile, state-of-the-art sustainable home on a barge and open it at the world famous Science World, in front of the people of Vancouver.  This will involve building a 3,000 square foot SAFER certified demonstration home on a barge that is similar in size to an urban residential lot.  The project will be a demonstration site for British Columbia and Canada's green home building and innovative environmental technologies, including tangible ageing in place solutions.  Science World is universally accessible by boat, bus, bike, car, streetcar, and walking.  This innovative project will create considerable spin-off interest among the general population, highlighting the importance of universal design issues and showcasing the SAFERhome Society, and other participating  organizations.  The BARGE Project offers a clear demonstration of how to design and build functional, commonsense and sustainable housing.  Being on a barge gives the ability to deliver and demonstrate leading edge green design capacity at venues throughout the West Coast.

This project will bring together leading experts in sustainable housing and community design from both the private and public sectors to demonstrate the value of green building design and innovative technologies in a home environment.  Innovations will range from alternative water and energy systems, through construction materiel, to the actual home model for sustainable design.  The project will demonstrate technologies and design solutions, including: reduced environmental impact, site development, wastewater treatment with water reuse and water conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable building materiel applications, senior's and children's home safety, universality, and age-in-place solutions. The SAFERhome program also creates opportunities for homeowners to gracefully age-in-place.  These homes remove socially divisive labeling such as families versus seniors or able-bodied versus disabled that are currently restricting innovation in building and development solutions.  The project will be extensively documented, both video and photo-stills, in order to maximize educational opportunities as part of a design education center project. The impact of the BARGE project will be evaluated by SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre. This project will place Vancouver at the forefront of residential green building industry, representing a new model for future home design within the sustainable community movement.

We are moving SAFERhome design, green building techniques and innovative technologies to the forefront, to demonstrate cost savings and environmentally friendly technologies in the home building services industry.  All of this will be accomplished in the heart of the city, in front of an international audience, for the benefit of all our communities.
